China swoops on coal

18 Jun, 2009 05:00 AM
The Chinese Government-owned mining company, China Shenhua Energy, is reportedly offering to buy farming properties in the Watermark area of the Liverpool Plains at prices up to 300 per cent above current land values.

The company has coal exploration rights in the area.

Federal Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton, said he was “extremely alarmed” at reports Shenhua had bought large tracts of prime agricultural land.

“I have grave concerns about the sale of nearly 200 square kilometres of farmland to the Chinese Government to remove up to one billion tonnes of coal for their own purposes,” he said.

“I have received reports four or five properties may have already changed hands, with a settlement to be reached at a later date.

Mr Coulton understood Shenhua was paying two to three times market value, although settlement apparently depended on the Foreign Investment Review Board approving the company’s investment in coal exploration.

The NSW Government last year granted Shenhua a coal exploration licence for five years over 190 square kilometres in the Watermark area 35 kilometres south-east of Gunnedah.

What will the sign on the gate say? Welcome to China?

Don't sell Australia out to the Chinese as they will only rape good food producing land and take all the money out of the country. Just like the rest Australia will gain nothing. The farmers need to stand together on this, form a co-operative and buy up all the surrounding farmland that is for sale. Play smart, sell out and Australia is lost for ever. The Chinese will walk in and take over. Wake up, don't be tempted to sell.

Shenhua is Chinese Government owned and one can see a parallel here with Rio Tinto's rejection of Chinalco's offer (also Chinese Government owned). In a related article in Herald News, Newcastle, "China Shenua told Chinese news agencies that the Watermark project had 'undergone all regulatory procedures in Australia and would not meet any policy restrictions or uncertainties'". So this is a done deal, is it......? You have a lot to answer for, Mr Ian Macdonald. Things are crook in Tullarook. Keven Rudd might like to put this Aussie phrase in his slang book.

We have been a give-away society for the last 20 years - why should we stop now !!! One day all Australians will be working for someone else - Chinese, India, Russia, North Korea - who knows who it will be. It's a bit of a lottery really, don't you think?

Who can blame the farmers for selling something that is three times the right price.

What a cleft stick! Who wouldn't be tempted by an offer of 3 times current market value? BUT what about the poor b's left? Could be surrounded by Chinese coal mines. AND will certainly cop massive rates increases after the next Valuer General's revaluations.

It's time we as Australians stood up to this lunacy. It is something that obviously must be done at grass roots level as those we elect to protect us (our governments) are those who are selling us out. Can we buy up large tracts of China's most productive farmland and bugger it up? I would say not. This land will be used for coal mining. Coal burns and releases co2. If governments both state and federal are so concerned about co2 emissions then this mining proposal should be shut down immediately. As usual with those in government, it's not about what's right or wrong or even sticking to some moral principle, it's just about the money. Of course if we as Australians want to mine and burn coal here we would be subject to all sorts of restrictions and costly taxes, but the Chinese can take it away and burn it without having any carbon tax penalties, giving them a further economic advantage. And we also lose out by the loss of productive farmland. How stupid and shortsighted is this government!!! That sound you can here from the north is the Chinese in Beijing laughing at us.
