Blind Bowral man 'killed on spot' while trying to cross road

10 Mar, 2010 05:34 PM
A BLIND man has died after he was hit by a truck while crossing a road in the NSW Southern Highlands, police say.

Police said a truck with a tipper and dog trailer had stopped at the traffic light intersection between Station and Wingecarribee streets in Bowral just before 5pm yesterday.

The 56-year-old blind man from Bowral was attempting to cross Station Street and walked between the tipper and the dog trailer, police said.

Unaware he was there, the 49-year-old driver drove off when the traffic light turned green and the truck hit the man, killing him on the spot, police said.

Witnesses stopped the truck at a nearby street and the driver was taken to Bowral Hospital where his blood and urine were tested. He was interviewed by police and released.

Police said investigations were continuing.
