Big rain coming to the NSW interior

03 Mar, 2010 07:36 AM
The summer was kind to the New South Wales interior, bringing enough rain to double the total summer average, and all of this in spite of the current El Nino.

February in particular was even wetter, with most regions across the Upper and Lower Western district receiving 400 percent or more of the monthly average rainfall.

As a result Moderate Flood Warnings are still in place for the Paroo, Bogan and Warrego rivers.

But the waters will barely have to time to recede before the next deluge from the above.

The low that has been sitting over southern Queensland, was previously part of a monsoonal system in the Northern Territory.

It has already swamped inland Queensland with hundereds of millimetres of rain and is set to head south during Tuesday and Wednesday.

Thursday is likely to see the heaviest falls, and they'll be focussed over the Upper and Lower Western once again.

Forecast models indicate 30 to 50 millimetres for the area, but there is a chance that there could be more than this.

On Friday, the most intense rainfall will move to the east.

Showers and storms may still fire up across the interior and western slopes on Saturday, but Sunday will see a dry and cold change clear these away.
