Canberra sweats through warmest night in 27 years

14 Jan, 2010 06:58 AM
TUESDAY night was Canberra's warmest in 27 years with the temperature still 31.5 degrees at midnight and only dipping below 25 at 5am, according to FarmOnline WeatherZone.

The capital's minimum temperature was 24.4 recorded just before 6 o'clock Wednesday morning, their highest January minimum in 42 years.

The highest minimum ever recorded in Canberra is 26.0 degrees in March 1983 and also in November 1946.

The warmth comes after four consecutive days of 35 degrees or hotter, with the last three days hotter than 38. The last time Canberra has experienced three days in a row hotter than 38 degrees was in February last year. The only other occurrence in the last 70 years was in 1952.

Also in the ACT Tuesday night it was Tidbinbilla's warmest in 27 years with a minimum temperature of 23.

Tuggeranong also had their warmest night in 13 years of records.

A cooler change is starting to take effect as winds turn more easterly.
