Half of all '08 lambs will not be mulesed

Half of all '08 lambs will not be mulesed

26 Sep, 2008 12:55 PM
Around 14.5pc of wool in 2008/09 will come from non-mulesed sheep and almost half of all lambs born this year will not be mulesed, according to the Australian Wool Production Forecasting Committee.

The projection is based upon a survey of more than 1000 woolgrowers taken across Australia in July and early August, supervised by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) and funded by Australian Wool Innovation.

The DAFWA survey included questions on the proportion of non-mulesed wool produced and lambs that would not be mulesed.

Based on the survey results it is expected that around 14.5% of Australian wool production in 2008/09 would be from non-mulesed sheep, an increase from the 11.5pc reported in the February 2008 survey.

The survey also indicated that almost half of all lambs (46pc) born in 2008 would not be mulesed.

This compares with 32pc reported in the February 2008 survey.

In addition to these results, 21pc of producers have a breeding strategy which involves sourcing bare-breeched rams, up from 14.8pc recorded in February.

Why the rush? There is no premium being paid for non mulesed wool, and no discount in price for mulesed wool. Regardless of what scaremongering tactics PETA pulls out of their fur hat next, the market is the true barometer of consumer opinion. To date, PETA's influence has been so limited that there has been no effect on the market whatsoever.

Must be a lot of wool coming off those crossbred lambs because everybody i know in boyup brook is still mulesing & plans to keep doing it. Trisolfen rocks.

Half not mulesed in 08-09? That would be questionable, unless they are including 1st and 2nd cross lambs in those figures. Of note, the few that have not mulesed merino wether lambs as a trial within their flocks are now questioning thier decision to do so.

I know some who are selectively mulesing as they breed towards eliminating this costly procedure from their management program. It is good that PETA has made breeders think about this problem, but bad that they do not accept solutions such as Trisolfen.
