Great Southern to sell 44 tree farms

12 May, 2009 02:28 PM
Timber plantation group Great Southern is poised to sell 44 tree farms across Casino in NSW and Miriam Vale south of Gladstone, Queensland, in a move that could fetch it $50 million, sources close to the company have told The Australian Financial Review.

AFR reports that the deal should help the West Australian-based company, which has net debt of $697 million.

Fears that Great Southern could be fighting for its survival were heightened last week when the group entered a trading halt, as that event followed the collapse of plantation peer Timbercorp.

Great Southern shares were still suspended from trade yesterday and it is understood it is still in discussions with its banks over $109 million refinancing due in October.

Great Southern expects to remain suspended from trade until Monday, May 18, unless an announcement is made earlier. Its shares last traded at 12¢ compared to a high of $5 a share in February 2005.

It will be interesting to see who has the money. What value, on the Great Southern register, has been placed on these plantations, does anybody know?

Bet those that sold their land to the tree people are glad they did when they did. Many acres of reasonably good country has been sold in the Upper Clarence and its tributaries. What a waste. It will now take a lot to clean them up. Perhaps the local timber mills that are still operating can utilise the trees that are large enough.

They purchased the properties for three to four times market value for high quality coastal cattle country in South East Queensland in 2000. They ripped out all the fencing, sprayed Round Up out of helicopters to kill the grass, planted trees as thick as hairs on a cats back which resulted in streams drying and dams cracking.

They now offer them at the same price they purchased them for - however still covered with 50pc trees. This lure is based on the fact that when the trees are harvested the "new owner" gets the freehold land....with the stumps.

However, unfortunately for GSP they failed to lodge a PMAV over any of their properties and the 50pc of the properties without trees are now mapped as remnant. So an owner will have 50pc of a property covered in stumps and 50pc of a property they cant do anything with. How much are they worth? About as much as someone is stupid enough to pay for them

My husband and I became suspicious of Great Southern when we recieved a letter saying our loan for our investments (we have two) are now with Bendigo Bank. I have been told by Great Southern everything will stay the same regarding our loan (we will still be able to sell off our woodlots at the end of our contract.) Yeah right!! Today I rang them and they told me everthing is still ok (yeah right, again!!!!) If you need to know anything look at our web site on our freq asked questions, which was basically a bunch of mumbo, jumbo. But the one thing that I did understand is that I am still legally bound to pay my loan or seek legal advice. So in other words thanks for your money suckers!!!
