Mid-East princess in plea to Rudd on halal slaughter

02 Nov, 2009 05:43 AM
THE King of Jordan's sister has appealed to the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, to stop the ritual slaughter of conscious animals for halal meat in Australia, saying it was not necessary under Islamic principles.

Princess Alia bint al-Hussein of Jordan, who is the sister of King Abdullah II of Jordan, said she had written to Mr Rudd saying that any lowering of animal welfare standards in Australia for religious reasons would be a blow to the country's reputation and undermine progress in the Middle East.

"Contrary to some claims, killing without stunning is not necessary under Islamic principles," she said.

The Australian standard on ritual slaughter for halal and kosher meat states that animals must first be rendered unconscious by electrical stunning before their throats are cut.

But under a disputed federal guideline, the Government has allowed at least four Victorian abattoirs exemptions to kill without stunning to fulfil Middle Eastern export contracts over the past two years.

"Reducing [Australia's] standards to permit animals to be slaughtered while fully conscious may meet the personal preferences of a minority but it is not an example that will inspire positive change, nor encourage the acceptance of pre-slaughter stunning in the Middle East," she said.

The Primary Industries Ministerial Council of federal and state agriculture ministers will meet in Perth on Friday to discuss the issue, but opponents of killing without stunning are concerned exemptions will be allowed to continue or the standard will be changed.

The previous government ordered a review of ritual slaughter in 2007, but the present Minister for Agriculture, Tony Burke, has not released the review report and is yet to decide on the issue.

Princess Alia said she believed Mr Rudd had a genuine interest in animal welfare and had assisted Jordan with upgrading equipment previously provided by Australia that she considered inhumane at the main abattoir in the Jordanian capital, Amman.

Jordan imports more than a million live sheep and cattle from Australia each year.

The Prime Minister's office had no comment yesterday.

Mr Burke said agriculture ministers would receive an update on technical detail on the issue at Friday's meetings.

"There are a variety of views within Islam as to what constitutes halal food and a similar range of views in Judaism as to what constitutes kosher food," he said.

"It's not for [the] Government to adjudicate over these differences, but it is our role within the spectrum of faiths in Australia to promote the most humane practices."

But Princess Alia said Muslims who believed animals could not be stunned before slaughter for halal meat were uneducated about the true teachings of Islam.

"I say this based on several fatwas and extensive discussions with the Islamic authorities who are qualified to pronounce upon such matters."

The Australian Meat Industry Council's veterinary counsel, John Dorian, said the council did not have the technical or religious expertise to make value judgments on ritual slaughter.

"Our position is that we will comply with the Australian standard and we expect the people who write the Australian standard and the policymakers who direct the standard basically to get it right," he said.

"Obviously as an export industry in Australia, we are always cognisant of the rest of the world's view of what we do and we try to do it the best way we can."

Princess Alia has been at the forefront of efforts to introduce stunning to Jordanian abattoirs, and her intervention has led to the bulldozing of an inhumane slaughterhouse and the closure of illegal abattoirs.

A foundation established by her this year has sought advice from the animal welfare group Animals Australia, which has been protesting against mistreatment of livestock in the Middle East and Australia's live export trade.

Australia exports 1.3 million tonnes of red meat, of which 382,000 tonnes is certified halal.

There is now no way that the cruel killing of unstunned animals can be justified by our Australian government. All un-stunned slaughtering (that has been taking place in our Australian abattoirs for more than 2 years) must cease immediately!

Why does the Labor crawl to these primitives who have been doing this barbaric act for thousand of years?

Religion, culture or tradition should never be used as an excuse to continue barbaric cruelty toward any sentient beings. It is heartening to see the Princess speak out with the truth on this issue. I sincerely hope that Kevin Rudd heeds her advice and acts without further delay to prevent further unnecessary cruelty and suffering at our hands.

Australia claims 'best practice' and 'world's best standards'. The fact that Australia has to be asked by overseas royalty to cease being cruel to the sheep slaughtered in Aust slaughterhouses shows clearly those claims to be 100% absolute rubbish. Nothing more than PR clap trap. Clap trap I add that the Federal Minister of Agriculture is proud to regurgitate. The minister is responsible for permitting this appalling situation to continue. He bows to pressure from the livestock industry and refuses to meet with any animal welfare group. His efforts are aimed at appeasing farmers - vote catching. The Australian farming industry are not animal lovers. They are not interested in animal welfare either. They are interested in $$$ SHAME SHAME SHAME.

Princess Alia is an inspirational woman. The Agricultural Minister must make a stand against such cruel slaughter practices, and farming communities need to support such a ban. Any sheep farmer that provides animals to abattoirs that currently slaughter animals without pre stunning should be ashamed.

If animal welfare groups are so interested in the welfare of the animals as they say they are, I challenge them to put up or shut up. Put your money where you mouth is and lead by example and implement practices that are world leading and change the industry by investing in it. You have rabbled on for at least a decade and have not invested one bit into the industry, you have just piggy backed off it at their expense and contributed nothing. Shame Shame Shame $$$

"Why does the Labor crawl to these primitives who have been doing this barbaric act for thousand of years? " You're talking about the unnecessary killing of creatures for a BBQ experience, or just having a cheap go at a different culture? Let those without sin cast the first stone, "tigerdicky", and don't think yourself holy if you can't give up the meat addiction.

Compassion First ! I reject your claims and take real offense to what you are saying. Firstly if Minister Burke was vote catching he would be the first Labor minister to do so in regional area - simple fact being there aren't that many votes there. As farmers we are committed to the welfare of our animals as they are the source of our livelihood. There are endless stories of farmers performing extraordinary acts to save and protect their animals. We are sick of emotional responses to our industry from misinformed ignorant animal lovers who have no concept of what it takes to look after large populations of animals or the contribution we make to the world's food supply and Australia's economy!

Agree with you Sam. Compassion First seems to have missed the fact that this is referring to a small number of slaughter houses that do not stun first. Shane, best to ignore tigerdicky (better known as dick). Most of his comments I've read are bigoted. He believes in the long outdated White Australia Policy, and appears to be insecure around people of other backgrounds.

If the King of Jordan's sister says that halal slaughter of fully conscious animals is not necessary, why are we allowing our animal welfare standards to slip? If we stun animals before slaughter, that is how it should stay. The only parameter our animal welfare laws are controlled by is the $$$. As for "emotional responses" (Sam), there are too many livestock farmers who are too willing to ditch the welfare of their animals to the live export trade. They are just abandoning any duty of care for profit maximizing.
