Halal, kosher slaughter targeted for inhumane practices

06 Oct, 2009 04:07 PM
SLAUGHTERING animals while they are still conscious for religious ritual killing causes pain and distress, according to a leaked Federal Government report, but it has not opposed the practice.

The killing of thousands of conscious sheep has continued for two years since The Age revealed at least four Victorian abattoirs had been granted exemptions to an Australian standard on ritual slaughter to fulfil kosher and halal contracts.

The standard stipulates animals must be electrically stunned unconscious before having their throats slit. The exemptions were granted under a disputed federal guideline.

The former government announced a review of ritual slaughter in 2007. Since then, Agriculture Minister Tony Burke has angered animal welfare groups by refusing to make it public.

The Age obtained a copy of the report, which states that sheep slaughtered without stunning can suffer "panic and terror" and quotes European studies that sheep can remain conscious for up to 20 seconds after having their throats slit.

But the review is non-committal. "The present report makes no judgments about the acceptability of any form of slaughter," the report says. "It is recognised, however, that stunning removes the hazards of pain and distress from the last stage of the slaughter process."

Animal welfare groups have accused the federal and state governments of putting a "cone of silence" over the issue and fear the report will be used to increase the practice.

Although many Muslim export markets accept meat as halal that has been slaughtered with stunning, Animals Australia fears granting further exemptions or changing the standard could lead to commercial pressure on more abattoirs to kill without stunning.

"While we value religious freedom, we do not believe this should extend to practices that inflict suffering on animals," said Animals Australia executive director Glenys Oogjes.

Mr Burke would not say why the report had not been released, but said work was still being carried out through the Primary Industries Ministerial Committee.

A spokesman for Victorian Agriculture Minister Joe Helper said Victoria had been involved in "consultations with representatives of the Jewish and Islamic faiths and animal welfare groups, including the RSPCA".

RSPCA Victoria president Hugh Wirth said such ritual slaughter was widely accepted as inhumane.

Peasants using primitive practices - stop it now!

It seems state and federal governments have been silent on this barbaric practice for far too long. Could it be they don't wish to offend Jewish and Islamic faiths. Sheep are sentient beings and would suffer pain and absolute terror. This is barbarism, it has no place in our society and should be outlawed now!

Giving in to another culture regarding slaughter of animals is beyond belief. Yesterday Australian public was asked to accept legalisation of poligamy. Go overseas to one of these countries with cultural differences and if you do not tow the line, you are thrown in jail at the risk of losing your life. Slaughtering conscious animals should be stopped immediately. How can anyone say they do not feel pain. It is ridiculous. This is turning the clock back and taking away progress. Australia should not be giving in to another culture's requirements. If they want to eat meat from an unstunned animal then go back to the country where this horrible cruel practice reigns free. Stop it now.

Economic benefits is the "god" of our leaders! These people formed their rituals from their nomadic past, and now it has become enshrined as part of their religion. However, it doesn't have to be this way. The whole livestock industry is barbaric, but allowing further suffering and stress is not acceptable. We already have enough "diversity", but we don't want more of it in the area of animal cruelty. Religions should be about care and compassion, not about suffering.

Of course it is barbaric and inhumane. There is no excuse for this kind of blatant cruelty, including religion, culture or money. That Tony Burke and the Labor Government are turning a blind eye purely for economic reasons is simply disgusting. The RSPCA should prosecute them for cruelty.

Fair comment all. I must admit to being shocked by the notion that any slaughtering is been done this way in Australia. However, I would prefer that before the welfare of sheep becomes too much of an emotional issue that the welfare of hundreds of thousands of women who undergo the barbaric practice of circumcision and various other discriminations for religious reasons be of greater concern to our politicians.

How dare you all speak against it!! You might upset the various "Religious" minority! Politician pandering to the minority??? Nahhhh!!

Agree sheepdog1 about the horrific genital mutilation issue, but as I understand, this is illegal in Australia as it should be. Caring about cruelty toward human and non-human animals do not need to be mutually exclusive, and should not be. Our government currently condones the appalling cruelty of conscious slaughter, and that is morally indefensible.

Other legal Australian agricultural practices that are just as barbaric, inhumane and morally indefensible are the live export trade, sow stalls, battery cages, broiler sheds etc. Educational tours of all abattoirs and intensive production facilities should be a mandatory part of every school curriculum. Maybe then the public protest and vote power would have more influence?

I agree with all of the above - these people have no feelings or compassion for animals. How can they say they believe in God?
