AgForce Cattle president Greg Brown has been elected president of the beef industry's peak body, the Cattle Council of Australia, at its annual general meeting in Orange today.
Mr Brown is a beef cattle producer from Mt Garnet in Queensland where he and his family fatten their predominantly Brahman herd.
"I am extremely proud to be elected into this position," Mr Brown said.
"There are a number of priorities that I look forward to working on as president.
"Currently, the industry is confronting significant challenges including increased input costs, a looming carbon trading scheme, heightened animal welfare activism and a global credit crisis.
"Ensuring beef producers have access to all the necessary tools to improve profitability, in particular effective R&D outcomes, is paramount."
Tim D’Arcy, a beef producer from Western Australia, was elected vice president and Paul Sayward, a beef producer from northwest Tasmania, was re-elected as honorary treasurer.
Mr Brown replaces Bill Bray who has concluded a four-year term as Cattle Council president.
AgForce president John Cotter congratulated Mr Brown on his elevation to this national role, which recognises experience gained from more than 30 years involvement in agripolitics.
"Greg has a strong belief in the need for the interests of producers to be represented by a clear national voice for the cattle industry," Mr Cotter said.
"His passion for the long-term viability of the beef industry is clear and AgForce wishes him well at Cattle Council as it helps steer the industry through some very challenging times."
AgForce Cattle vice president Grant Maudsley from Mitchell in southern inland Queensland will be acting president of the Queensland beef group until an election is held in the near future.
