Monsanto says glyphosate resistance can be managed

17 Apr, 2008 04:41 PM
ONE of the major reservations farmers have had surrounding Monsanto's Roundup Ready has been surrounding glyphosate resistance - both in in-crop weeds and in canola volunteers the following year.

Monsanto technical development leader, Dave Moore, says although there are issues, both can be managed.

A resistance management plan has been drawn up to help growers keep glyphosate an effective tool.

"The major point is keeping Roundup (glyphosate) effective on weed control - it is just so important for Australian farming systems," Mr Moore says.

He says managing resistant ryegrass will be an issue in Roundup Ready canola, just as it is in other crops depending on a glyphosate knockdown, but that it can be managed.

"Before planting, an assessment of the paddock is made, on the basis of the risk of ryegrass developing resistance."

Mr Moore says farmers entered the herbicide history for the paddock and combined this against the level of resistance to figure out a strategy.

If there is too high a risk of glyphosate resistance, it is recommended growers not plant Roundup Ready.

If Roundup Ready is planted but the paddock is assessed as high risk of resistance, it is recommended that glyphosate is not used at all the following year.

Should the profile be less risky, the application is permitted, along with a prescribed two additional methods of weed control.

If the paddock falls in the low risk category, only one other form of control is required.

"Basically, the take-home is to make every application of herbicide count and make sure you use a variety of different modes of action to control weeds," Mr Moore says.

A new documentary by French journalist and film maker Marie-Monique Robin entitled "The World According to Monsanto" http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-842180934463681887& q=world+according+to+monsanto&total=12&start=0&num=10&so=0&t ype=search&plindex=0 was aired on French television on March 11, 2008.

Over a period of three years Robin has collected material for her documentary, including numerous interviews with people from several countries in Latin America, Asia, and Europe in addition to the United States.

The video is also available on YouTube in a series of eleven segments beginning at "The World According to Monsanto (1)". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMRd8rzkl2k

The entire series documents many of the horror stories this company has been involved in including PCB's, Agent Orange, and most recently GMOs such as RoundUp Ready seeds and recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH), also called recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST).

Of particular interest is the interview with former US Secretary of Agriculture, Dan Glickman, beginning about 9:50 into segment two and continuing in segment three.

Robin reviews the revolving door that existed during the Clinton administration and continues through the Bush administration.

Pennsylvania farmers who have been fighting Monsanto over the freedom to label milk as 'rBST free' will appreciate knowing the role the Clintons played in getting it approved.

What a wonderful comment to counter the official line on GM. The article gives very little confidence that glyphosate resistence can actually be managed. Of course this is only one of the many risks associated with GM that farmers simply don't want to acknowledge. If you also see the film "The Future of Food" which is on YouTube and on Google videos, again you will see a segment on the revolving door of US politics and Monsanto. You will also see the very real health issues arising from consumption of GM food and drugs in the rare instance that it can be identified. The labelling of GM ingredients is an urgent requirement if we are going to start growing it. In the meantime, avoid anything containing imported corn, soy or canola.
