Biodiesel will continue with momentum in US

10 Feb, 2010 09:42 AM
PROMINENT US economist and futures forecaster Don Reynolds says 2010 will be a year of recovery and renewed momentum for the biodiesel industry.

During his keynote speech to the 2010 Biodiesel Conference & Expo in Grapevine, Texas, Reynolds said the biodiesel industry was sold on the premise that it's good for a green economy. But it's actually much more than that.

"I'm bullish on biodiesel because it's important to our national security," Reynolds said. "Biodiesel is critical to cutting into our trade deficit by lowering our dependence on foreign oil."

As for the general economy, Reynolds expects that despite the recovery, the next decade will produce less than average growth, due to structural problems and the bad choices made with personal and government debt.

He believes 2010 will be characterised by rising long-term interest rates as inflationary forces grow, due to the global economic recovery and a weak US dollar driving commodity prices higher.

"Bad choices made with government debt", for sure. Some of it to subsidise the fundamentally uneconomic US biofuels industry.

Controlled burning is only a small part of managing fires. Fuel reduction by grazing with live stock needs to be implemented at the first signs of regrowth; after all this is the way the indigenous managed their landscape prior to white fellows. They burnt small areas to encourage wildlife on to the green patches this thinned out the regrowth. It would be great if the so called experts could find the time to look and think laterally.
