Rising glyphosate prices have boosted demand for the WeedSeeker selective spot sprayer, with numbers of units sold in the past three months, greater than those sold in the previous three years.
WeedSeeker sensors target weeds in fallow paddocks - instead of a blanket spray over both weeds and bare soil - resulting in an 80pc chemical saving.
With Roundup herbicide prices at $11 a litre and rising, growers have looked more favourably towards what could be considered an expensive tool at $105,000 for the WeedSeeker technology alone, to suit a 24-metre boom.
Unprecedented demand for the WeedSeeker has caused a backlog of orders and a two-month wait for the technology out of the United States (US).
Crop Optics sales manager, Scott Jameson, Tamworth, NSW, said his company had sold 16 broadacre units in the 12 months to September last year.
It has taken orders for a further 19 units since then.
