 GM superweeds claim denied

GM superweeds claim denied

29 Jan, 2010 03:34 PM
A ROW has erupted over claims that genetically modified glyphosate tolerant crops are accelerating the development of herbicide tolerant ‘superweeds’.

Self-described food safety group and anti-GM campaigners MADGE Australia earlier in the month released a statement quoting a report from the American scientific magainze Proceedings of the National Academy of Science that there had been an increased instance of glyphosate resistant weeds following the uptake of GM technology.

However, the Dean of Melbourne University’s Department of Land and Food Resources Rick Roush, a committed proponent of GM said MADGE Australia was mistaken in attributing the rise of herbicide resistant weeds on the use of GM.

“Herbicide resistant weeds are not new, nor are they ‘superweeds”, he said.

He said that while the strain of resistance described in the PNAS paper was ‘fascinating’ scientifically, it did not support the thesis that GM led to herbicide tolerant weeds.

“Australian cotton growers have grown Roundup Ready cotton for over a decade, and despite intensive searches, no glyphosate resistant weeds have been found,” he said.

However, MADGE Australia researcher Madeleine Love said the excessive use of Roundup Ready technology led to increased pressure on glyphosate, the most used herbicide in Australian broadacre farming.

"GM crops, designed to be sprayed with glyphosate (Roundup), are making that herbicide useless for both GM and conventional farmers."

She said that the PNAS findings showed that it did not matter how good a chemical rotation a farmer used, natural resistance would evolve in GM crops.

However, Dr Roush said that herbicide tolerance, while a serious issue, was a separate topic.

“Resistance to glyphosate in annual ryegrass, for example, has been described in Australia and California since the 1990s, and is now widespread but still completely independent of GM crops,” he said.

He said the answer in managing herbicide came back to chemical rotations.

“The consistent message from weed scientists is that to avoid resistance, we must all practice a diversity of weed management practices, and avoid dependence on any one herbicide, a newly described resistance mechanism does not alter that message.”

Dr Roush claimed MADGE Australia was ignoring strong data of the benefits of GM crops.

“In attacking GM crops, MADGE has continued to ignore the enormous human health and environmental benefits of GM crops around the world.”

He said that a far bigger threat existed in more familiar territory.

“As the former Director of the Weeds Cooperative Research Centre (1998-2003), I must note that if there are any superweeds in Australia, they are escaped garden plants like Patterson’s Curse and blackberries.”

“Garden plants account for at least 60% of our major weeds, and are the most likely source of more major weeds.”

What health advantages??? There are none. In fact there is clear evidence that GM damages kidney and liver. More research will be given later in the year that clearly shows that GM is a hazard to your health and certainly not a benefit.

In the evolutionary Serengeti, all the giraffes have different length necks and get along quite nicely. UNTIL the big drought comes along, and they all die EXCEPT for the ones with the long necks which can survive by eating the tops from the tallest trees. So all surviving giraffes have long necks. That is the way evolution works. It isn't nice and progressive, it is catastrophic. The evolutionary expression "survival of the fittest" is just a euphemism for the "death of the weakest", and that's what herbicides do. Kill everything EXCEPT the ones with the long necks, and they of course go on to breed. Agricultural chemicals are evolution on steroids. To say that there will be no superweeds is incredibly short-sighted. We are breeding them as fast as we can go.

“Garden plants account for at least 60% of our major weeds, and are the most likely source of more major weeds.” ----really? I dont see them in paddocks, on the real scale of problems they don't count for much, and many will die off in drought and fires as is natural. even the acacias from africa. and some- if not all the sanctioned yet invasive clumping fodder ones. yet 100% of "accepted conventional no till" paddocks use chemicals. and as admitted wild oats and rye you forgot Radish and mustard too! are increasing yearly in spite of ever increasing glyphosate, and even more toxic chemicals 24D resistance is also growing. No till gm and chem is simply a agribusiness marketing dream, and people fell for it. the Women who control our familys purchases DO NOT want GM. about time you Listened.

Mr Roush, it is you who is badly mistaken, try telling GM cotton growers in America that there are no super weeds. Ru resistant pig weed have evolved to be so massive that it breaks harvest machinery. Some cotton growers have had to resort to hand hoeing! It's time to stop the GM deception.

The point that is being made is that herbicide resistant weeds are already with us and have nothing to do with GM crops. Herbicide resistant ryegrass has been in existence in Victoria since the 1980's. GM canola has only been around for a couple of years. Don't fall into the trap of blaming everything on GM.

Glyphosate use has grown exponentially in Australia, primarily in non-GM zero tillage agriculture. This is what is putting pressure on resistance. A farmer growing herbicide resistant GM crops has regrowth and volunteer plants that are from the resistant crop, therefore he MUST rotate his chemistry or he will not control the GM volunteers. Non GM farmers often take the easy choice and do not rotate to more expensive and more difficult alternative chemistry to glyphosate, and this creates resistance. Overuse of any chemical will produce resistance, but GM farmers have no agronomic choice but to rotate. I have grown GM cotton in Australia for 14 years, and seen massive environmental and social benefits ensue, not the least being an 85 percent reduction in pesticide use, and no cotton chemicals in our rivers. The chemicals now regularly found in our rivers and environment are the long lasting residual triazines which are required in non GM canola and other crops, and which have been banned in many countries because of their carcinogenic reputation. If Australian GM farmers get resistant weeds, it will be from their non-GM neighbours overuse and understewardship of chemicals.

Poor al and Dr Roush continue to highlight the blinkered, short-sighted, ignorant and brain-washed ideas trumpeted by the powerful and very dodgy bio-tech/agri-chemical industry. Seeing as though a vast majority of the global GM cropping situation relies on herbicide tolerance ie RR soy, canola, maize-controlled by Monsanto, this infers that MORE Roundup will be used, as that is the whole point of their GM pseudo-scientific endeavours. Can you not see that if Roundup-tolerant canola is taken up by oz farmers this will lead to higher rates of use of Roundup, which will no doubt lead to higher rates of herbicide tolerant weeds. Eliminating these plants from paddocks will become an even harder task due to GM crops.

Madge is a committed 'greenie' organisation and has close ties to the Greens. They should declare this alliance so that people are informed. GM cannot damage kidneys and liver, Vicki Wilson. GM is a technology. You cannot eat it.

Hi Belle, I am one of the founders of MADGE. We are a group of ordinary people who are concerned about GM food. Anyone is welcome to join us, no matter what their political persuasion. We have met with politicians from both major parties and from four of the minor parties. Our issue is that unlabelled and untested GM food is entering our food chain. This is despite public opposition and warnings from scientists and farmers in North America and elsewhere that GM crops are not what their promoters say they are. The more people that understand this the better.

Hi Fran - your issue that unlabelled and untested GM food is entering our food chain is understandable. However, why are you also not concerned about new unlabelled and untested non–GM food entering our food chain? Why do you consider that all new non-GM varieties we eat are okay? Don’t you know that many of those food plants have been bred with use of the induced mutagenesis technique? That technique involves producing mutations in plants by use of mutagenic chemicals and the application of intense radiation (cobalt 90 etc radiation ) – the good looking plants are then selected and bred up for their seed release. Surely you must know that radiation etc like this causes more changes in the composition of plants and their genetic material than the insertion by GE of just 1 or 2 genes. Why aren’t you concerned about that? Please let us know. I suspect you won’t because MADGE just seems intent on GM technology bashing.
