Nats condemn 'unfair' AWB ballot

28 Jul, 2008 01:35 PM
Federal Nationals politicians Fiona Nash and John Cobb are backing wheat growers who claim AWB has employed "undemocratic processes" for its the FutureVote08 ballot to amend the company's constitution.

The Wheat Growers Action Group has complained that the four grower directors opposing the removal of grower marketing rights have been silenced through "the threat of legal action and the failure of AWB management to provide them with logistical support to attend scheduled meetings".

"That is completely unfair and totally unacceptable," Sen Nash said.

"Growers deserve to be fully informed of all views regarding this issue."

Sen Nash and Mr Cobb are backing WGAG's demands for AWB to provide the resources to allow all directors to attend the remaining grower meetings across Australia.

The grower meetings conclude on August 7, the deadline for postal and online voting is August 19, and the extraordinary general meeting will be held in Melbourne on August 21.

"There is not going to be a fair outcome unless there is a fair process with fair representation for growers," Mr Cobb said.

I can understand the National Party's desire to punish the AWB for the embarrassment it created for the organisation during the wheat for weapons scandal, leaving the dual class share structure in place with farmers as directors will no doubt have a negative effect on the company, but it is just plain dumb to shackle a company that wheatgrowers need to be competitive. Blind Freddy can see that the Nationals are running out of oxygen. It is time the National Party started to think for itself rather than listening to a ratbag element that continually claims to represent the views of wheatgrowers.

There is nothing unfair about complying with the law in this instance. The logic in the proposed amendments is overwhelming if AWB is to have a viable future now that it will have to compete on an equal basis with its competition. It is not a charity, nor is it a govt supported service entity. The original grower directors and shareholders, in that capacity, have no financial stake in the company's business so it would indeed be unfair if bona fide, real life investors were to be let down because of pique or resentment on the part of a sectional group who can't keep up with the times or face commercial reality. Circumstances change, and smart people change with the circumstances, at least in the world of commerce.

It needs to be remembered that the only reason the AWB exists is because farmers grow wheat.

If the proponents of changing the shareholding entitlements are unhappy with the present system, why don't they abdicate and create their own wheat marketing entity.

Go find your own suppliers & buyers and leave the decrepit AWB to the National Party.

Steffi......... The only reason the AWB exists is because of the eight hundred million dollars, WHEAT FARMERS put up to float the company in the first place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AWB is our own(wheat growers) wheat marketing entity. Average wheat grower and WA observer need to look at the Murdock's company stucture, very similar to the current AWB (as are many others). Murdock manages to struggle on, "plain dumb and shackled".
