Santos plays economic card on CSG

21 Dec, 2011 11:17 AM
SANTOS has sought to stave off the growing threat of a moratorium on the coal seam gas industry in NSW, citing the $15.2 billion boon its project in the Gunnedah Basin would bring to the state's struggling economy.

The oil and gas producer's ambitions in the state's north-west involved a potential investment of more than $16 billion over the next 25 years, Santos's vice-president for eastern Australia, James Baulderstone, said.

That would also add 2900 ongoing full-time jobs, including up to 1800 jobs during construction in 2014-17, he said, referring to a report by Allen Consulting into the economic benefits of Santos's CSG plans, The Australian Financial Review reports.

"This really is a fantastic opportunity for NSW. It will convert this state into a growth state from a resource point of view," Mr Baulderstone said, in Sydney yesterday.

How much will it cost to repair the GAB? How much of this money will remain in Australia? How much land will the salt kill? Where is the evidence that this project will lead to a reduction in GHG emissions? Living in a gas field I can tell you CSG companies are bludgers, trashing roads and the environment for quick profits. Will the profits cover the losses, or will the CSG companies and the corrupt politicans take the profits and leave the residents to pay for the clean-up? Like they always do. SANTOS, Mud Volcanoe, corporate responsibility. Advertising is no substitute for science.

Advertising is no substitute for science. Advertising won't help fix the mud volcanoe in Indonesia. Advertising won't make up for all the toxic waste already dumped on this country and in its rivers by CSG companies. Advertising won't fix our roads that CSG companies repeatedly wreck. Advertising won't make CSG a true green alternative? Advertising just shows desperation coupled with a large slush fund and a willingness to lie because the truth would see your whole industry banned.

CSG companies are missing the point. To exploit the resource in the wholesale way they propose they must do it accountably.

That will be an entirely new concept.

It will also be an entirely new concept for the politicans and Regulators.

Miners and CSG companies have only themselves to blame. They used to squeak by without adequate enforcement of the regulations when they engaged in divide and conquer tactics. Then they got greedy and tried to mop everybody up at once.

Their industry is so ill disciplined that they have even been prepared to invade the urban area of Sydney.

They do have to play it as it's the only one they have. The sorry truth is that's the only one the State & Federal Gov's are interested in looking at, as everything seems to be for sale even the land we live on, the water we drink & the air we breath.
