Push for curbs on coal seam gas projects

04 Jul, 2011 10:47 AM
THE Greens plan to force the major political parties to choose between helping farmers or drillers.

The Greens plan to amend the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act to specify the extraction of coal seam gas as another justification for intervention, giving the federal government the power to halt coal seam gas projects on agricultural land, The Australian Financial Review reports.

Canberra's ability to intervene in coal seam gas development is tightly restricted under environmental laws, leaving the approval of projects in NSW and Queensland up to the states.

"Effectively, we want more triggers in that clause," incoming Greens Senator Larissa Waters said. "This will be a real test for others, particularly Queensland Liberal National Party members. At a political level, they've effectively decided to back the miners, not the farmers."

Who said the Greens are no good. This is a better effort than what the Nationals are doing.

I agree totally hm. All the other main parties, liblabs and nats- have sold us out to some nasty corporate greedy buggers.

John Anderson, the former deputy Prime Minister, ex Nationals, is leading the way for many of our farms to be turned into an industrial wasteland near Gunnedah, via eastern star gas who he is chairperson of.

The liblabs have done nothing but support this disaster.

The Greens have been the only party to consistently show support for landholders, have tried to uphold the rights of the landholders, and have a long term vision for the farming landscape/ environment....

HM, agree with you. It is very hard to trust the LNP in regard to coal and gas.

They are no more anxious than Labor to give us our land rights and let us say "NO" to mining if we want.

This is what I'm talking about...

THE GREENS HAVE GUTS!

Farmers Friend, let's see if any Labor members also 'have guts', guts enough to stop worrying about the Greens keeping them in power; guts enough to cross the floor and vote against Bob's boo boo.

In reply to the above i suggest instead of just knee jerk reactions you should all read the most recent information which gives CSG a clean bill of helath. In fact Origin Energy who own a large portion of farm land continue to combine CSG with cattle operations without problems So the two industries can exist side by side.

You're right JOX they can work side by side with CSG as long as the landholder who paid for the land has the final say on everything, including proper compensation annually?

Jox, it was a nice bit of spin that one about running cattle on a CSG lease wasn't it? No mention of the protection of aquifers, no mention of the fact that intense CSG operations stuff up the operations of a grain growing operation. No mention that for each gas well, it takes up five acres of land for access, machinery and all the roadways they need to operate the gas field take up much more. It quickly gets to the point where you can't turn your air seeder around in the space between the wells. It makes no mention of all the methane bubbling up out of the ground where fracking has happened.
