Katter puts priorities on the table

03 Sep, 2010 05:17 AM
BOB Katter has put a sweeping policy manifesto to Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott, calling for devaluation of the Australian dollar, no tax on biofuels, tough quarantine rules to curb food imports and laws to break up Coles and Woolworths.

The idiosyncratic Queensland independent has signed off on a 20-point reform plan covering economic and social policy, water, protection for agriculture and even enhanced rights for camping and fishing.

In a letter sent to the two leaders, Mr Katter says his manifesto is ''not a list of conditions'' but ''a guideline to priorities during the coming parliamentary term''. He says there is a need to finalise the election outcome, but ''positive indication that the incoming government would accommodate these interests would certainly assist in the current decision-making process''.

Mr Katter wants ''strong government commitment'' for a northern Australia clean energy corridor to fire the national power grid, nominating two projects, the Kennedy wind farm and the Pentland solar bio-fuels plant.

In addition, he wants to remove tax on Australian produced biofuels - and force the petrol companies to sell a 10 per cent ethanol blend, rising in time to 22 per cent. Prices would be controlled by a board excluding representatives from Coles and Woolworths.

Ethanol magnate Dick Honan - a prolific political donor to all sides - has previously given financial support to Mr Katter and another of the key independents, Tony Windsor.

Mr Katter says he wants no carbon tax or emissions trading scheme - with emissions reductions to be driven entirely by renewables.

He says he wants the mining tax scrapped. Instead, he proposes a customs duty of 5 per cent on all imports. He claims such a duty would not breach international trade laws.

The Future Fund should bankroll national development.

Workers should maintain their rights to collective bargaining and arbitration should be re-introduced - a development that would undo a decade of labour market deregulation.

Farms should also have the right to bargain collectively in dealings with the retailers to achieve higher prices for their produce.

...and a trip to Disneyland. Lots a' luck, Bob. I suspect you are going to be the man left out in the cold when all this is over.

Hang on Bob. People clearly choose to vote with their wallets when they go to Coles or Woolies. They are free to go to the IGA store down the road if they wish. Many do. Companies like Coles are public corporations. Their problem is inflated costs, not high profits. Check for yourself, they are left with around 3c for every 1$ spent, which is hardly a rip off. Even politicians should inform themselves of the reality. This is all public information.

Bob Katter has brought common sence back into politics once again. He has such sound ideas. He's the only politician that is easy to understand. Go Bob Australia needs you.

Well said Kanzi. All Bob's policies will do is increase the cost of food and other goods and services, which is an inflation increase. Wages will go up with the inflation rate meaning increased cost for farmers without compensation that the non-farm sector gets. What an impending disaster coming up from these 3 independents policies, by helping Labor continue down the road of destroying the agriculture sector. Things like broadband and hospitals and schools are great, but they have to be paid for, and with full compensation for inflation (from the tax) in the urban sector, guess where the bill will be sent. As for tigerdicky and bushie bill, some words that have some real information in them would be nice, some words with reason and truth. If you two are an example of the Gillard govt we are going to get, god help us as you set an example that tells us there is no ability to formulate policy this country needs.

If you can understand Buffoon Bob, VickiLynn, you are probably a good candidate for an interpreter's job with him, or perhaps with Blowhard Barney and Fearless Fool Fielding.
