Joyce pours scorn on 'rubbish' Oakeshott

10 Sep, 2010 02:07 PM
Prominent Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce has poured scorn on independent Rob Oakeshott over claims he sought a NSW ministerial post when he was a state member.

Mr Joyce described as "rubbish" a comment by Mr Oakeshott that he could not recall the conversation that he had in 2007 with NSW Premier Morris Iemma about becoming a minister.

Comment: Oakeshott is just another wily politician

Reports in News Limited papers allege Mr Oakeshott - who is set to reveal today if he will accept an offer from Prime Minister Julia Gillard for a regional affairs role - pushed for the state role. At the time, Mr Oakeshott was the state independent member for Port Macquarie, having defected from the Nationals.

Mr Iemma is cited in the reports as confirming that Mr Oakeshott made the approach.

But despite a warning yesterday from Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to lay off Mr Oakeshott, and his fellow independent, Tony Windsor, Mr Joyce seized on the reports - describing as "rubbish" Mr Oakeshott's claim that he could not recall the conversation.

He told Sky News that it was "rubbish" that someone would not remember such a significant exchange.

The reports stated Mr Oakeshott was encouraged to approach Mr Iemma because of the premier's decision to apppoint Richard Torbay, an independent, as Speaker in parliament.

Mr Joyce said it was now clear Mr Oakeshott had not been impartial in his negotiations with the major parties on who to support to form a minority government.

"This would clearly suggest that Mr Oakeshott was not telling us all the facts...he wasn't an impartial advocate about whhich side to choose," he said.

"He had already asked to be a minister in a Labor government. He only told people half the facts about what was going through his mind".

Mr Joyce said there was shock and outrage in the rural electorates of Mr Windsor and Mr Oakeshott, whose joint support of Ms Gillard tipped Labor into government.

Rob, don't worry about this sore loser - you're only doing what he and his mob of dingos should have done!

Yes, why are we not surprised. The agenda was cooked from the start and the 17 days hiatus was a ploy to make it all look a legitimate choice of Labor to back rather than the Coalition. This corner of Lyne electorate had a fairly good Nats showing at a range of booths. It will not take much to get a good campaign going if we go back to the polls any time soon. Should Oakeshott take a ministry he will have his hands full looking over his shoulder for Labor hacks and Green rainbow chasers. He might miss the most local of problem areas.

Hopefully this hung parliament will encourage all politicans to more represent their constituents and realise contributions may be made from everywhere. It is not so important that Barnaby be a Minister as the opposition to and scrapping of the Emissions Taxation Sham. This fraud has already within house claimed the 2 leaders Turnbull and Rudd. The 2 party system is well past its use by date.

tigerdicky. Yes, go on, support a party that knifed its own sitting PM who got it elected in the first place. Now that is a dog act!

Mugshott never had the resources to mount a second election campaign if it came up. And both he and Windsor knew perfectly well that a second election to resolve a deadlock would result in them losing. Their voters would finally understand the importance of giving a clear mandate to a party capable of forming a stable government and discard them for the indulgence they always were. So forget about all their spin about stable long term government in the national interest. This was pure self interest on their part and these two are now the most loathed men in regional Australia.

Barnaby Joyce may be a bit off the mark with his comments from time to time, but at least we know what he stands for. Oakeshott should change his name to Bigshot because like Kevin Rudd, he wants to be the Bigshot in every situation but doesn't know how & clearly stands for nothing but the seeking of attention. Gillard is ditto the pair of them & hence her betrayal of Kevin & her making Rob look like a traitor in the eyes of his own voters.

Independent nonsense. Your dear ol' Nats have done nothing for the bush in the 12 odd years they held the balance of power in the government. Not one thing. It is a retirement home for cockies who could not cut the mustard in farming and they should be abolished.

Ian, don't write Tony Windsor off yet. Clearly he regarded the ALP as less dangerous for us than the coalition, and in this he is probably right. After all it was the coaltion, in opposition and in government, with their insane economic rationalism and free market theories, who did the greatest damage to rural Australia. I was very surprised by Tony Windsor's support for the NBN, because I regarded it as an impossibility, a second Telstra created for the purpose of destroying Telstra. There was an article in this weekend's OZ, belittling Windsor's advisers on the NBN, one of whom, Heaven forbid, doesn't even have a degree. It seems that Armidale has already been cabled with glass fibre. This unlettered bloke was a senior Telstra technician on or about that job, and has since been redunded. The second advisor is a local consulting engineer. Three good heads together. So Tony Windsor probably knows a lot more than Julia or Tony or any OZ journalist about the nuts and bolts feasibility of getting this NBN up and running. Perhaps he can see a lot of change out of $43 billion. So long as the BER model is not used to build it. He may even redund the NBN company itself. Watch and see.

If this selfish clown Bull shot is the best we can come up with to Govern this place we really are in incredible trouble. He even makes Barnaby look intelligent.
