Fielding pleads with Senate to reconsider 'inconvenient fact'

13 Jul, 2009 01:27 PM
Family First Leader Senator Steve Fielding has today written to all senators asking them to look closely at the science before casting their vote on an emissions trading scheme.

Central to Senator Fielding's doubts are the trends in global temperatures over the last 15 years, which he says are not in line with the increase in global carbon emissions.

In his letter he sets out a chart based on IPCC figures, which shows that over the last 15 years carbon dioxide emissions have increased, while global temperatures have remained steady.

"This runs counter to the assumption underpinning the CPRS which says that increasing carbon dioxide emissions are the leading cause of global warming," Senator Fielding said.

"Given the Rudd Government has failed to explain this obvious contradiction I can't understand how any member of the Australian parliament can vote for an emissions trading scheme.

"I find it incomprehensible that we’ll be voting for this scheme and going it alone before the rest of the world acts.

"Kevin Rudd and Penny Wong are hanging the Australian economy out to dry if the rest of the world doesn't follow suit."

You have my complete backing. I urge you to stand by your questioning. You have been the only politician to have the courage to query this ridiculous global warming nonsense. If our Government is successful in implementing this current fiction, Australia will be bankrupt and probably taken over by China. Do these so called experts not realise that since the world began, there has been various "ages" eg ice age etc? The fact that the Great Barrier Reef is already regenerating is being kept very quiet and that in parts of Antarctica the ice is actually thicker. The world is being held to ransom by scare tactics and a one-sided argument. I can almost guarantee China and India won't be taken in by this nonsense. If Australia implemented all it is talking about, it won't make one iota of a difference to the rest of the world.

Senator Fielding - you also have my complete and total backing. I admire your courage and honesty concerning this vitally important issue, you are a rare breed of politician. Standing up for what is right as opposed to what is popular is vary rare for a politician. For the future of this country and for the future of my children I beg you to continue to fight this scam. I cannot thank you enough - keep the pressure on them - and keep the bastards honest. Thank you.

At least the US Government had enough common sense to both recognise, and include agricullture in their Carbon Trading Scheme. As Confucious would say; "You go 'bout it the Ruddy Wong way".

What gets me is why the media persist in the face of so much evidence to keep pushing this scam without an 'alleged', 'suspected' or 'maybe'. Why are they so defiant??? Talk about a consiparcy!!!!!!!!

The arrogant stupidity of Fielding is almost beyond belief. The vast majority of the world's scientists have found that it is human activity that is causing rapidly escalating climate change. The evidence is overwhelming. Fielding selectively chooses discredited figures to support the argument that it is not happening. A betting person would probably put money on the scientific community. And, of course, if we adopt the Fielding posture of head in the sand and arse in the air and - almost impossible to conceive - he's wrong, then what?

The smaller the sample the more unreliable the outcome. Fifteen years is a very small window to look through trying to determine a trend. The temperature and carbon dioxide lines track close enough together when observing the records over the last one hundred and fifty years to prove the connection. The scary thing is that the increase is not linear but exponential. In this case we should prepare for the 'worst case' scenario, and hope it will not happen.

What's more annoying, is that few of the governments concerned with the problems of climate change are actually even thinking of a staged change to the way our societies operate. Whether or not mankind is responsible for climate change doesn't change the fact that we have built a consumer-oriented lifestyle which is NOT sustainable. We use plastic (which are made from a very finite resource) carelessly; we do not harness the free and abundant energy from nature and apparently have no intention of doing so. Before I would ever support an ETS, I would want to see our government encouraging the harnessing of solar and wind power, research into energy storage solutions, a national rail network and the depopulisation of the cities. All of these things create jobs, reduce emissions, increase efficiency, reduce oil usage and form the foundation of a much more sustainable society for future generations! Rudd, prove that you care about climate and the future by doing something useful, not something costly and in the end utterly useLESS.

I would not like this bloke looking after my family!

TM you are absolutely spot on. Great to read some common sense opinions on here instead of people blindly disagreeing with it. Sadly that would take some long term planning by govt and the opposition. Something sorely lacking in Australia. Everyone is to busy protecting their own turf and not looking forward with a desire of leaving the place better than how they found it. Fielding how about you challenge the govt and oppostion to deliver in these other areas which are low hanging fruit and will provide a real tangible foundation?

Totally agree with John Newton's comments... Fielding obviously has his own hidden agenda to push and the stakes must be high enough that he is not ashamed to present himself as a complete moron. At least for those who understands the basics of climate physics.
