Feds should take over the Murray to save SA: Xenophon

Feds should take over the Murray to save SA: Xenophon

13 Aug, 2009 05:22 PM
INDEPENDENT Senator Nick Xenophon has called for a complete national takeover of the Murray-Darling Basin because Adelaide is running out of water.

Senator Xenophon pointed out that just over a year ago that South Australian premier, Mike Rann, said the national water agreement was a stunning result for south Australia but he was "stunned" because "we're running out of water".

He said a national takeover of the entire MDB was needed now.

"Lets not mince any words here," he said. "South Australia is being shafted by the Eastern States.

"We need a full federal takeover because we can't trust the Eastern States to ensure that we have enough water in South Australia."

Senator Xenophon acknowledged there was very little water throughout the basin, and said over-allocation needed to be urgently addressed.

"If there is a full federal takeover you won't get the other States auctioning off water rights or reviving dormant licences, which is the worst thing we could do right now with the crisis facing us.

"There is no cohesive approach, you have state squablling.

"If we want to deal with this as a nation there must be a national takeover because we can't trust the States to do the right thing by the river system and South Australia."

He said the effects of the current water crisis in the basin were being felt hardest in South Australia.

"South Australia is bearing the brunt of years and years of mismanagement," Senator Xenophon said.

The Senator agreed with calls to wean Adelaide off the MDB, pointing to a $200 million package he negotiated for a storm water harvesting initiative in the southern capital.

We have all known that this needs to be done - not holding my breath, though hoping someone with a bit of clout can get it moving - namely Mr X.

Would someone please tell Senator Xenophon that we folks in the country have been out of water for many months.

We cannot rely on the channel system from the River Murray anymore to deliver our home or stock needs. We have to buy in rainwater for the house. Maybe he and other cronies need to get their heads together and find an alternative reliable source of water (for Adelaide) to the River Murray.

The River Murray is not able to supply Adelaide anymore. He has to face the reality. If we are to have a managment team for the River Murray for all Australians, then let it be of people who consider country folk as well as the city folk.

A level playing field for all.

farmers wife, the reality is that Adelaide uses a tiny fraction of what is over-allocated from the Murray. The reality is that irrigation with over-allocated water is finished. The River Murray is not able to supply the existing irrigation industry.

For all my life I have been hearing about Adelaide's water problems, but somehow Adelaide seems to have survived until now. If it was possible to build a pipeline to Kalgoorlie 100 years ago it should be possible to now build a pipeline from Adelaide to wherever on the Murray there is a secure supply of high quality water.

As well as overcoming multiple problems this would greatly reduce wastage. It seems that the need until now has not been sufficient to warrant the cost.

Senator X is correct. The Murray issue is totally political with deals done with Labor leaders' mates. When SA's water-use plan expires in 2011, we will be at the mercy of the Eastern States, whose plans don't expire until 2015 [Victoria] and 2019 [NSW].

If Rudd had the guts to take the lead, all plans should have been abolished last year by the Feds and a new program made then for all basin states under the Murray Darling Commission
