Barnaby Joyce talks down a storm

15 Dec, 2009 01:00 PM
BARNABY Joyce is trying ever so hard to be good. After putting his foot in it comprehensively last week, he struggled to avoid pitfalls yesterday.

He explained, defended and played down controversial remarks on Chinese investment and the possibility of the US defaulting on loans, and then refused to be drawn on one of his favourite topics: climate change.

''That is a very good question for [climate spokesman] Greg Hunt,'' Senator Joyce said, with only a touch of amusement at one-upping his interviewer. ''I'm a very responsible person and I'm not going to go into Greg Hunt's portfolio.''

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott lectured his frontbench about discipline on Friday, and shadow treasurer Joe Hockey slapped down Senator Joyce.

Mr Abbott said yesterday: ''Barnaby will always be an authentic and original politician, but I think he got the message loud and clear on Friday that he is now part of the team and that means not running off on tangents … He is a smart politician and I am confident that he is going to learn fast.''

Senator Joyce rejected a newspaper article that said his views on foreign investment, the possibility of the US defaulting and climate change were an echo of the extreme right-wing group the Citizens Electoral Council, which said Senator Joyce was on its mailing list. ''If I'm on the party's mailing list, I can honestly say I can never remember reading anything from them,'' he told the ABC.

The article was obviously bringing him grief. ''Jewish groups are now worried about me and it's just so absurd.''

On his attacks on Chinese sovereign investment in Australian resources, Senator Joyce said he had not called for a ban. As for the ''remote'' possibility of the US defaulting on loans, he cited several sources, including a couple of professors, to back his comment.

Asked whether he accepted he had to curb his commentary now he was shadow finance spokesman, Senator Joyce said: ''Of course I do.''

Asked also if he accepted he had made some mistakes, he said: ''I accept that when people bring up things you've said before, it can cause problems.'' Reverting to the old Barnaby, he added: ''There you go. What's my penance? Three Hail Marys?''

Would you let this redneck hayseed off the chain? No way!

Farmonline should be running a book on how long BJ's commitment to the team will last. I would say "blow-up" time will be in February 2010. After being "home" for the holiday period, he will be brimming with ideas picked up from the more strident of his followers, and he will not be able to help himself.

HeyBushie Bill & Trickeydickey, I would stand behind BJ any day. But he has to be a team player. Rudd and and his crew are deeply worried about BJ questions in Parliament about where the money coming from? But than again Rudd doesn't answer questions does he?

Perhaps if more people took time to study the debt to earnings ratio of the countries and states in question, they would be a little more circumspect than some of the journos reporting BJ's comments last week. They sounded a bit like Robin "I haven't read them myself" Williams comments on the climategate emails, "I have it on good authority that they are harmless". If they are "harmless" then the Pope's not Catholic. Every Australian owes it to their kids to research the leaked emails and the science behind the opposition to global warming. At least opposing papers are in journals with a more crediable process of peer review than IPCC reports.

Do not estimate him Bushie Bill and Tiger Dickie - try some original thought and assessment. You are being influenced by the city media who are so enthralled by the day to day political mire that they lose track of reality. You might benefit by taking the opportunity to meet Barnaby.

No matter how much "Bushie Bill" may wish from his/(her?) ALP head office, Barnaby Joyce has single handedly revolutionised Australian politics. After nearly 40 years of bookworm government we now are getting the prospect of a government which knows its people. It is not Barnaby Joyce who is learning, it is the rest.

He is no fool so don't you worry about that!! He is a great man and we have him to thank for lots of things. At least you know his thoughts not like the SPIN in all the Labor camp. The bigget spin is all this climate change scam. Apparently it is a very well organised meeting in Copenhagen. -NOT!! Just listening to ABC interview with one of the delegates.

Bushie Bill that is a great idea. Title Cooking time for a Redneck to boil to the surface. I give him just a little longer. Perhaps early March as the frustration the election hasn't been called early is enough to boil over and off he goes on the tangent.

Farmers and all in agriculture, including some of the buffoons above, have been happy as their industry has been slowly emasculated by successive governments, resulting in the inevitable squeaky voice doomed to be never heard. At least Sen Joyce has shown that he does not suffer from the same impediment as most rural politicians and so is still, one might say, entire. Just when did we in Australia lose our respect for and believe in the strength of those who stand up for what they believe? No, we prefer now to cut them down at the first opportunity. We demand conformity, blandness, all things grey. We prefer to whinge rather than strive to change what we know is wrong and unjust. For every rural community that is going forward there are ten going backwards and all you can do is poke fun at Sen Joyce. I will be happy when all politicians who have been elected by country people, people from rural electorates, stand up for their constituents rather than just give in and toe the citycentric party line. Have a look at WA all you non-believers. Royalties for Regions actually works.

Tigerdicky, you can call Barnaby all the derogatory names you can think of, but at the end of the day, he doesnt abuse his staff. He is REAL, you know exactly where you stand, he does swear, but unlike your Prime Minister he can control it. And seriously, with a screen name like you have, calling people names is a bit rich.
