Abbott labels ETS a slush fund

Abbott labels ETS a slush fund

31 Dec, 2009 06:14 AM
THE CLAIM that 2.9 million low-income households will be $190 a year better off under the proposed emissions trading scheme raises suspicions it is designed to be a ''political slush fund'' rather than a solution to climate change, according to the Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott.

Speaking after the Government said Treasury modelling showed low-income households would get an average of $610 in cash compensation but would only experience price rises of $420, Mr Abbott questioned the purpose of the scheme.

''When the Government starts talking about 120 per cent compensation for some people, it gives rise to the understandable suspicion that the ETS is not about the environment, it's really about a political slush fund.''

Mr Abbott called on the Government to release the modelling behind its claims. A Government spokesman said the analysis was based on October 2008 Treasury modelling and updated to reflect the lower carbon price forecast in November's Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook.

While it released some detail on the impact on low-income households, the Government has held back on similar information for wealthier households.

But it did reveal that 90 per cent of all households would receive assistance. On average those households would receive about $660 in compensation in 2013. Price rises of 1.1 per cent, totalling $624 a year per household, were forecast by that year.

The Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, called on Mr Abbott to back up his claim that bills for the average household would rise $1100 a year. ''You can't run an Opposition by just making things up,'' he said.

Mr Abbott rejected this, saying his figure was based on reports of the Government's own modelling, but he declined to offer more detail.

The 62% increase in electricity prices for an annual bill of $1600 is $992 by itself, without gas, petrol , diesel and the flow on to food, goods and services. Poor old dopey Garrett should join in the Education Revolution and learn maths and not just quote Rudd's spin. Also not missed is that Rudd is only compensating those that vote for his lot, everyone else is left to hang out to dry. It is about time if they want the Rudd TAX, that they were fair dincum and allowed a public debate instead of playing the blame game.

Industry buys permits, so up go their prices, the money used to buy permits is handed back to the public so we don't have to pay higher prices. So apart from creating meaningless jobs, in an economic round-a-bout, can someone please tell me how this helps reduce pollution ??

No maybe about this. A slush fund is exactly what the ETS is.

''You can't run an Opposition by just making things up,'' However, Labor can run government that way, apparently.

Happy New Year, readers, and our long suffering editor who appears to have missed out on a day off. It seems, in the brave new green/left utopia, that low income Labor voters don't produce carbon emissions. Or is this the first faint recognition by the Ruddites that some types of CO2 emissions are more acceptable than others? Reasonable men and women would conclude that emissions from basic food items, medical expenses, aged care and core education are essential components of life while others are not. But the raving nutters who govern us make no distinction between the fuel emissions from a discretionary holiday in Bali, and those of the flying doctor. Forgive me, but I thought the whole purpose of good governance was to exercise the high level of discernment needed to ensure that worthy causes and objectives are not jeopardised by the myopic wielding of blunt instruments. We assess a professional by the skill and precision of his tools and the best Rudd can manage is a blanket cop-out for his own voters.

$49billion over 10 years. KRudd's ETS definitely IS a slush fund. Transfered from the so-called rich to be given to the so-called poor. True socialism at its very worst. It didn't work in all the communist countries, so it won't work here, but it just might bribe enough urban voters not to put KRudd out at the next election. The ETS is just another way for the govt to collect a massive tax, and redistribute it where it will do Labor the most good. KRudd will need to do something, as all he has to show for his term in office so far, is broken promises and a huge national debt.

I hoped the the IQ level of posters may have improved in the Christmas-New Year period, but alas.

It is on the record that the Government "compensation" is from industries "FORCED to pay for their emissions" while ignoring the huge tonnage of CO2 from bushfires.

Every land owner - farmer, grazier etc - should be protesting on behalf of Peter Spencer who is on a hunger strike in protest against the "freezing" of land to create carbon-sinks to enable the Government to meet the Kyoto Protocol without paying any compensation - he has been there for 39 days. The media have virtually ignored him except for 2SM who gave him 6 hours coverage yesterday, inviting affected people to ring in and comment. Google Peter Spencer and see his plight for yourself. COME ON AUSTRALIA - WAKE UP - THIS IS YOUR FUTURE TOO - YOU COULD BE NEXT !!! SHOW SOME TICKER AND STAND UP !!
