Water sharing rules could be renegotiated

Water sharing rules could be renegotiated

08 Jan, 2010 09:22 AM
THE South Australian government is demanding a share of the 300 gigalitres of flood water expected to flow into the Menindee Lakes, reports The Australian Financial Review.

Responding to SA Premier Mike Rann's plea yesterday, Acting Prime Minister Julia Gillard said state governments had agreed to the rules for managing the water in the Menindee Lakes, which are controlled by the NSW government until they reach 640 gigalitres.

"If Premier Rann seeks to have those rules renegotiated then the federal government is happy to facilitate any such negotiations," she said. "Obviously, we would need a specific proposal."

On January 4, the SA government said it would not lift water allocations to the state's farmers, who are now receiving 48 per cent of their entitlement, as water storages had not risen.

South Australians in Adelaide are not in the Murray-Darling Basin yet draw water from it. They take plenty but don't contribute any and have the temerity to complain when the river run is low.

I guess it's the selfish attitude exemplified by gargaloo that is really at the root of this problem. Rivers don't have state boundaries and that's why water should be fully controlled by the Feds - instead of greedy Queenslanders taking the water before it goes anywhere else. SA has every right to water in the Murray Darling Basin

Maybalene. Honestly before you start making such ridiculous accusations, how about you actually have a look at a map of the Murray Darling basin.

Here we go again, South Australians whinging and wanting to change agreements when it suits them. Perhaps they should show some leadership and immediately cease all transfers of water out of the MDB and provide that water to the Lower Lakes and other areas IN the MDB that urgently need water. Truth be told, Rann and his mates are only making a fuss because it is close to election time and they are desperate for votes.
