Trucks are safe, owners insist

08 Jan, 2010 10:03 AM
THE trucking industry has rejected accusations that its safety standards are slipping, arguing that a combination of better roads, improved driver education and increased use of rail will accelerate the existing decline in the road toll.

Trucking companies including giants such as Linfox and Toll, as well as single owner-operators, say the industry is safer and will play a growing role in freight shipments as the economy grows, despite recent high-profile accidents, The Australian Financial Review reports.

The Australian Trucking Association's NSW manager, Jill Lewis, said calls this week from the Rail, Tram and Bus Union to ban the road shipment of dangerous goods represented a "knee-jerk reaction".

With many in the industry expecting demand for freight haulage to double by 2020, more regulation without investment in infrastructure would push up prices of key items such as fuel and food, she said.

Of course the Australian Trucking Association would say that but they are distorting the picture. Nobody is proposing the complete elimination of trucks because that is simply impossible. What is proposed is using rail to carry fuel and dangerous goods over long distances unless there is no alternative. Trucks are still needed for local delivery from the nearest rail siding. This is just going back to the way things were only 2 months ago when Shell, Caltex and BP stopped sending fuel by rail.

How is a train safer then a truck? It carries much more dangerous goods in a single load and can crash just as easily. Go on youtube and look at what happens when trains derail and catch fire. The results are VERY SCARY. The best way to make transporting dangerous goods safer is for car drivers to respect trucks a bit more. I've just returned from a trip where a car & caravan overtook me head on into oncoming traffic pulling in with no more then a metre between his caravan and my truck. Just a few km from an overtaking lane. And then you wonder why accidents happen.
