Rudd blames climate sceptics for global sabotage

08 Nov, 2009 05:56 PM
KEVIN Rudd has launched a full frontal assault on global warming sceptics, lumping Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull in with a "new league of world government conspiracy theorists" he accuses of sabotaging progress on a climate treaty.

The attack came as senior politicians conceded a treaty to cut greenhouse gas emissions is not possible this year, and will be delayed at least six months.

Wealthy nations said the best hope for next month's Copenhagen climate summit was a "politically binding" agreement, setting out timelines and emissions targets for rich nations, as well as funding for poor nations to adapt to climate impacts.

The pessimism followed a week in which 50 African nations briefly walked out of UN climate talks in Barcelona, accusing the leaders of wealthy nations - including, by name, Mr Rudd - of not doing enough to cut emissions.

"I don't think we can get a legally binding agreement by Copenhagen - I think that we can get that within a year after Copenhagen," UN climate chief Yvo de Boer said.

Climate Change Minister Penny Wong said the minimum result for Copenhagen to be considered a success would be "an effective political agreement".

Yesterday the Prime Minister accused conservative politicians and media commentators of "quite literally holding the world to ransom, provoking fear campaigns in every country they can".

Speaking in Sydney, he said climate sceptics came in several guises: from those in outright denial - comparing them with cigarette companies that dismissed a link between smoking and lung cancer - to those who paid lip service to the scientific evidence but preached a wait-and-see response.

"It's time to remove any polite veneer from this debate," Mr Rudd said. "The stakes are that high."

"If Copenhagen does not deliver the outcome we so urgently need, no individual climate change sceptic will be responsible, but each of them will have played their part."

He said Mr Turnbull's refusal to back the proposed emissions trading scheme was evidence of entrenched scepticism in conservative politics.

The speech came as negotiations continue over amendments to the emissions trading scheme.

Senator Wong confirmed the Government would not accept all the Opposition's proposals due to updated Treasury costings revealing a massive shortfall in revenue from the scheme.

Mr Turnbull dismissed Mr Rudd's attack as an attempt to distract attention from the controversy over border protection policy.

"He ought to calm down and concentrate on the negotiations," Mr Turnbull said.

This week's UN climate meeting was the last before the Copenhagen conference.

Observers believe a legal treaty may be possible at a second Copenhagen meeting in mid-2010 or at another UN summit in Mexico next December.

The US this week tried to push responsibility for the perceived failure of climate talks on to China.

Its chief climate envoy, Todd Stern, said the US would not agree to emissions targets unless China made similar moves.

But a new analysis suggests developing countries are acting.

Consultants Ecofys found major developing nations are on track to slow their emissions growth by more than 20 per cent by 2020.

This meets one of the Rudd Government's conditions for Australia to set a target of a 25 per cent cut in emissions by 2020.

But the condition that Australia wants other rich nations to meet - that they agree to cut emissions by at least 25 per cent in total - has not been met.

Just like all lefties: attack the person, attack their credibility, attack their honesty, attack their motives but never address the issue! Copenhagen is world government by stealth and clauses in the agreement give over control of critical Australian law to unelected faceless bureaucrats at the UN. That's the real issue Rudd should be addressing!

It is about time that people understood the difference between climate and weather. Climate change doesen't mean next week's weather or next year's, it means change over millenia. The last ice age took thousands of years to form an ice sheet covering most of North America and global warming will also be thousands of years in the making not a few decades hence. The Arctic was once tropical and will be again. The next ice age will come in about 60,000 to 100,000 years. The only thing that really concerns us now is the carbon cap and trade proposals where taxpayers are being hoodwinked once more and their money fraudently taken to feed the already rich.

Good, the clowns are getting rattled. Remember just a short time ago they were claiming that sceptics didn't even exist? Yet now they claim that their failures are all the fault of us naughty sceptics. It is timely feedback that our message is gaining traction and a reminder that we need to keep at it until we have our foot on the climate crazies' throat. But we should also be aware that Rudd is paving the way for more robust attacks on individual sceptics which is likely to include intimidation and physical violence. It was clear from the very start that these people have always had it in them. And it will certainly get a lot worse before it even starts to get better. So hold your nerve, folks, and let this stuff run its course.

Yeah Rudd blames everyone for his own behavior - and we're the ones who will pay www.twawki.wordpress.com

I don't think they are "sceptics" Kevin, I think they are "realists". People are slowly waking up to the fact that some of you politicians have some very strange, dangerous agendas, and veiws are starting to change on this so called global warming rot. Maybe people are reading there history books!!!! After all, this has all happened before! These scare-mongering global warming boof heads all need locking up.

Since when has the rest of the world seriously cared what Australia does as long as they are not in line to gain from it? Grow up, get off our high horse and asses what this ETS will actually achieve (sceptic or not). This is not about climate change any more, it's about deals, political positioning and, largely, how much money can be made... Sickening oppression of the working class and poor. This is not a religion, scientific debate should be heard. There has been an ETS in Europe, has this actually decreased global emissions? Let's get back to funding agricultural research, set up major infrastructure and be on the front foot to feed this booming population. Better than planning to hold back the tide.

If you are interested in some simple solutions to the climate issue, there is a new series of books for kids and city people that suggest farming methods to address the issue. www.infinart.com.au

World Government by stealth - please! If there are so many who do not see CC as an issue and the ETS as a fraud well you can just vote the left governments out at the next election, so nothing to worry about. Then Ian you can express your hate-filled revenge by pressing your foot down on the throat of the lefties (but iced volvo would not like you to attack the man). Rebecca can relax because Australia will never lead the world on silly left wing ideas like giving women the vote or the eight-hour day. Jeff and Jamie can relax as the climate slowly shifts as it always has, the planet is after all in very good shape (well my patch outside the window of the air-conditioned office is anyway). Because the people on this blog are smarter, better informed and more openminded than scientists (sorry I forgot thier all part of the global conspiracy and thier only motivation is funding, because we all know that is such a gravy train). The rate of extinction is nothing to be alarmed about it has happened before, no matter that the planet lost 60% of species. Think how much easier the life sciences will be when all the species we have to study are rats, dogs, carp, foxes, cats, rabbit.

Instead of governments and businesses cashing in on 'Climate Change', why doesn't the UN just lay the whole thing on the table and ask everyone to submit their views! We are only hearing from the chosen few and now some of the sceptics are voicing their opinions, let them be heard! The more they deny them the right to speak, the longer they will need to wait! Of course, the UN does not want them to speak because the majority of what the sceptics are telling us is true!

Truth? Wish there was some in this paper, which is why I don't buy it anymore. Zulu
