NFF backs ETS amendments as good for farmers

25 Nov, 2009 03:21 PM
BENEFITS will flow to Australian agriculture from the deal reached between the two big parties in Canberra this week, according to National Farmers Federation president David Crombie.

But he also concedes that an emissions trading scheme is going to cost farmers money.

Mr Crombie said NFF was still "working through the detail" of the package agreed to between the Government and the Coalition to introduce an emissions trading scheme in Australia from 2011.

He says there are some positives for agriculture from the deal reached this week.

"We believe there are some positives for agriculture in the proposed amendments," Mr Crombie said.

"Certainly excluding direct emissions from agriculture is a real positive and it's a positive to include compensation for our trade exposed processing sectors, and the commitment to develop alternative pathways for offsets are fundamentally the points that we put forward.

"Subject to working out the detail we think that agriculture is probably pretty sensibly positioned, but there's still some work to do."

Mr Crombie said there was a real priority now to change the Kyoto rules which were "flawed" and "restrictive" so there were more abatement opportunities recognised for agriculture.

"It's a framework and it's a positive framework as far as agriculture's concerned but we just now need to work through the detail to understand exactly how it will work and how it can work for the benefit of farmers," he said.

"The one thing we do know is that the emissions trading scheme is going to cost everybody in Australia and farmers aren't exempt from that.

"The exemptions that we have are for our direct emissions and for the treatment of our trade exposed processors and the ability to develop alternative pathways for offsets – that's where the benefits are.

"But there'll still be that baseline cost for our and other inputs."

Mr Crombie said he wouldn't try to engage those people who don't believe in climate change or hated the idea of an emissions trading scheme.

"I think there's a general concern throughout the whole community about the cause and effect of climate change.

"I think what we need to do is put that debate to one side and get the science right and understand it.

"The fact is we had draft legislation in front of us that would have crippled agriculture and what we focused on was in the interests of Australian agriculture to get amendments to that draft legislation."

Good show young Crombie, that showed the rats and mice, the rabble, they don’t know what’s good for them, we do. If you’d stood up and said "no way" there wouldn’t be an ETS and the government would have had to do something about the problem instead of tax the riff raff for it, damn good show lad!!!

How did David Crombie become the president of the NFF? I don't know anyone who voted for you. How dare you not support us. Is there anyone out there who will take the side of FARMERS? Change NFF to the "No Farmers Federation".

The Squatter - And why would that be? Do you really think the government gives a damn what the NFF opinion is on this new tax? Yes I'm totally against it, but the outcome is far better for agriculture than it was prior to negotiations! One way or another this new tax was always going to come into play, be it from a Labor or Liberal government.

What I want to know is when this whole man made climate change thing is exposed as the bovine excreta that it is, who is the organisation responsible for funding the repayments of ETS taxes paid? Treasury, or the scientists that lied? And they have knowingly lied. But Krudd built a campaign on those lies. Excreta is going to hit the fan......

The NFF is up to its old tricks again - acting as an arm of Government.

Crombie is so ill-informed on the huge gaps in the climate manifesto that he seriously thinks Rudd would have had the courage to fight a double dissolution on climate science, and win. Why does he think they are so keen to avoid any sort of scrutiny? They have the standard MO of the thief, that's why. The last thing they want is bright light and attention to detail. It is clear that along with the "Vichy Liberals", we also have the "Quisling Farmers Federation".

Read the amendments. This is an incredibly generous deal for farmers. They get a whole new market, they get to innovate and somebody else pays for it! The smart ones are already working out how to make a buck - and they will. Sure there will be scams, but what market doesn't? I wonder how many sceptics will suddenly become believers when they can see a little profit in it.

Crombie seems to have suddenly changed sides and is now in favour of the new tax. A political chameleon that tried to turn the MLA AGM into a political bunfight between the NFF and the ABA last week. His behaviour was apalling. How can the State Farming Organisations continue to fund the out of controll NFF? Corporate agriculture is their obvious base. Family farmers do not need to be misrepresented in Canberra by David Crombie.

It is very interesting to read the two very opposed posts from Ian Mott and Michael. We all know Ian of old - given to the outrageous and unsubstantiated self-serving drivel expected of those who fear change, and cannot comprehend living and working in a world that some far-sighted people have had the courage to change for the benefit of future mankind. People such as Ian have not had a new idea since they walked out the school door for the last time, probably with the Intermediate Certificate or equivalent, under their arm. These people cannot live with change or challenges, cannot function in a world where they are not provided with special unearned benefits provided by the rest of the community, who generally are not as well off as these rent-seekers. Michael, on the other hand, welcomes change, and sees opportunities flowing from change. He is happy to get on and back himself to earn a living without expecting the rest of the world to give him any special considerations. If Australian agriculture is to survive, it has to accept challenges and be innovative and inventive, as M is. Old Jack McEwen has a lot to answer for in creating a generation expecting constant handouts.

To Susan and Bellinger (you should know better!), you seem to be blinded by the fact that if left untouched by NFF's efforts, we would have been slaughtered. There was always an intention (as per the CC Green Paper) to 'make agriculture pay'...and by heck we would have. At least now that potential can be budgeted on, can be allowed for, managed, and if Crombie and Charlie McElrone keep up their hard, and more so, smart, savvy and strategic ways, then just maybe we'll get to use our farming systems to earn us credits which is a darn sight more than you what you proposed...which would have gone absolutely nowhere. It was already a foregone conclusion. You don't deserve the right to stand up and say you are on our side and Crombie isn't.
