Junior Landcare educating future farmers

23 Aug, 2009 11:57 AM
PUMPKINS are the latest instructional tools being used to teach children about sustainable farming practices.

The Junior Landcare Pumpkin Challenge is about to kick off for its second year, and will enlist up to 15,000 Australian schools and students to organically produce their own food.

Add a prize pool including a Nintendo Wii for the heaviest fruit, and you've got yourself a competition.

Junior Landcare spokeswoman Sheena Martin said about 60,000 seeds would be sent to groups and individuals once registration opened tomorrow.

Schools, groups and students will be required to visit the challenge's website every month to enter details about their pumpkin's weight.

Landcare representatives will determine the individual and group winners once the competition ends next March.

"Because [pumpkins] do grow so massive and huge it sparks that sense of fun and creativity in kids and really engages them," Ms Martin said.
