COAG backs national bushfire warning

30 Apr, 2009 06:27 PM
Australian leaders have agreed to build a national telephone emergency warning system by the next bushfire season.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said his Government would give $15 million to help states and territories set up the system, which will send messages to landlines and mobile phones.

Mr Rudd said the warning system, advocated by Victoria following the Victorian Black Saturday bushfires, would not be foolproof.

"But it does respresent an important step forward in providing the best possible emergency warning system in the case of future natural disasters," Mr Rudd told reporters after a Council of Australian Governments meeting in Hobart.

Victorian Treasurer John Lenders welcomed the decision to have the system up and running by the next bushfire season. He said states and territories would meet its operating costs.

Warning messages will initially send messages to landlines, and mobile phones selected by their billing address, Mr Lenders said.

Further development of the system would mean that messages could be narrow-cast to mobiles in areas where the disasters may strike.

Not before time. This should have happened years ago - as they trialled this system after the Grampians bushfires.

Good idea, but tell them to firstly improve the coverage of mobile phones in regional areas, then we might get the messages. It is a serious safety issue that coverage is poor, even an hour out of Brisbane once you are off the highway, so that there is NO service when you need it in an emergency.

This is a great idea, but are those without mobile coverage, as is the case in most rural areas, expected to sit by the phone without leaving the house?

It is about time that the federal government forced mobile suppliers to provide coverage that is equal to other countries such as Russia and Mongolia.
