Burke sees off challenge to NFF vice president post

24 Jun, 2009 11:53 AM
QUEENSLAND farmers Charles Burke has been re-elected vice president of the National Farmers Federation at its annual policy council meeting in Brisbane this morning.

Mr Burke headed off a challenge from outgoing NSW Farmers Association president, Jock Laurie, and former president of the Victorian Farmers Federation, Simon Ramsay.

Neither of those two candidates was elected to the board.

David Crombie was elected unopposed to the position of president, which will be his final term in the top job.

A new structure at NFF will this year see it do away with a treasurer's position.

The vice presidential outcome leaves Mr Burke as a strong contender to succeed Mr Crombie as president next year.

Director results for the five board positions saw the re-election of former Cattle Council president, Bill Bray, and former NFF treasurer, Nick Keatinge.

Canegrowers chairman, Alf Cristaudo, new Victorian Farmers Federation president, Andrew Broad and AgForce president, John Cotter are new appointees to the board.

A new constitution is now operational at NFF which will allow new industry and associate members join its fold.
