The latest State and Territory winner, Norma Higgins, a Katherine resident, will go to Canberra for this year’s Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) Rural Women’s Award on May 27.
Mrs Higgins has won a $10,000 bursary and sponsorship to attend the Australian Institute of Company Directors Course in Canberra, as have other winners from each of the States.
Mrs Higgins has been involved in the Katherine Horticultural Association since its inception, is actively involved with the Primary Industries Training Advisory Council and is a founding member of her local group of NT Women in Agriculture.
“Her love of cooking led her and other Katherine women to form the Katherine Region Food Processing Group and obtain a grant to set-up a commercial, community kitchen for locals to make their products.
“Norma’s winning project is to set up a weekly market in Katherine that will showcase local produce to residents and tourists," Northern Territory Primary Industry Minister Chris Natt said.
“The market will bring benefits to the Katherine community, provide a venue for the sale of goods and give tourists a taste of what the region has to offer.”
