Rebellious Joyce slapped back into line

Rebellious Joyce slapped back into line

13 Dec, 2009 05:49 PM
Shadow treasurer Joe Hockey has slapped down new Opposition finance spokesman Barnaby Joyce over his comments on debt and banking.

Mr Hockey said the Senator was wrong to claim Australian states and the US Government might default on debts, and that his comments on banks and Chinese investment were not policy.

Mr Hockey stressed that he, not the outspoken Nationals senator, was in charge of Opposition policy on foreign investment and banking.

As Kevin Rudd pilloried the Opposition over Senator Joyce's provocative comments, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott read his frontbench the riot act about discipline at its first meeting.

The Nationals' Senate leader had spoken out about the dangers of the US Government and Australian states defaulting on debt. He warned that if the US defaulted it would cause an ''economic Armageddon''. He urged a tougher approach to the banks and a harder line against Chinese investment in Australian resources.

Mr Abbott said he had told frontbenchers at yesterday's meeting that ''shadow ministry and shadow cabinet solidarity starts now … Everyone understands that and everyone will play by the team tactic, play by the team rules.''

Asked whether state governments could default, Mr Abbott said it was ''very important that we have sound public finances''.

Mr Hockey said Senator Joyce's comments were not Coalition policy.

''He's not responsible for foreign investment [policy] - I am,'' Mr Hockey said, adding that the Opposition had no plans to change banking regulation. ''We put in place [under the Howard government] the best financial services regulation in the world - it's globally recognised as the best financial services regulation - I helped put it in place.''

Mr Hockey said there was no evidence that any Australian states or the US were in danger of defaulting on loans.

Senior Liberals are anxious to take an early tough line against Senator Joyce, because his loose comments play into the Government's hands and damage the Opposition's economic credentials.

Mr Hockey and Senator Joyce had separate talks after the frontbench meeting. Senator Joyce said after the shadow ministry meeting: ''In a way it's kind of convenient because every time I get a difficult question I can say, well that's a view of shadow cabinet which I can't discuss.''

Mr Rudd said: ''To have the finance spokesman of the alternative government of Australia saying that one of our states could default - this is gross economic irresponsibility, policy on the run, shooting from the lip.

''There is a reputational interest here for Australia, whatever side of politics you're on … to defend the Australian economic interest.''

Abbott thought it would be better to have BJ inside the tent pissing out, rather than outside the tent, pissing in. Well, it seems old Barnaby doesn’t mind pissing inside his own tent, much to the angst of his fellow tent-dwellers. Abbott will long regret appointing Hanson the Second (funny how they both come from Queensland) to his team. Turnbull had too much intelligence and integrity to do this. Abbott didn’t, and will pay the penalty for his inability to understand that a political maverick can only succeed by continuing to be a political maverick, and this is mutually exclusive with being part of a team. 2010 is going to be an interesting year. I am sure the sophisticated media is looking forward to endless opportunities of frequently and mercilessly skewering a political buffoon.

Bushie Bill, Your ignorance knows no bounds. Barnaby Joyce was born and bred in NSW. You've demonstrated your ignorance of wild dogs, and it seems your grip on current affairs is no better.

It's good to see a pollie talking exactly like it is. Queensland was always good until we were invaded by Mexicans. It's a bit like the STATE OF ORIGIN mate, we're one step ahead of you blokes. Malcolm won't be with the Liberals for much longer but Barnaby, he's more disciplined and he's loyal. Labor in Queensland, they could'nt run a grog party at the XXXX brewery - they're gone too. Loyalty Bushie Bill, that's what it is about old son.

The only thing really wrong with what BJ said regarding the US's economic dilemma is that it’s very true. It would seem that all the stimulating has served to do is to "dig the hole deeper" without any real exit strategy from the "corporate communist" excesses that has brought the world to this current position of an economic road to nowhere.

And which government is selling its assets to get its budget under control? No chance of defaulting? Oh yes there is, and the people have had enough of mining companies destroying rural land and areas for the mighty dollar, which is then wasted on shoring up that governments hold on power. Do you know what is produced in rural areas? FOOD. Try living without it. The rural people are sick of having their assets appropriated "for the good of the community" without any compensation. More loss of FOOD producing ability. It all links together. Good on you Barnaby.

Brindi, before you become vitriolic, you should read (and understand) what your wrath is about. I didn't say BJ was born and bred in Queensland. I said he COMES from Queensland, and he does. He is a QUEENSLAND senator! And your comments on wild dogs and current affairs? What are they all about? As your own infamous past politician (failed) might say "please explain". Thanks, les, for getting my day underway with a laugh. Your "Barnaby is disciplined and loyal" line really was hilarious. Are you a professional comedian? You should be! To finish, perhaps all you erudite economists could include your credentials and qualifications with your profound economic pronouncements? It could possibly allow us lesser educated to assess the wisdom of your profound statements. Surely you must all have PhDs in Economics to be so sure of yourselves.

How the hell did wild dogs come into the conversation? Is Brindi short for Brindle?

It looks like Brindi has got under Bushie's skin, a man who backs a loser, like the Turnbull faction of the Labor party, and who finds sanctuary in the prestige of qualification.

Bushie Bill you better change your name - how about City Cecil?

Check mate, old mate, you, like Brindi, didn't bother to read and understand what I wrote before you responded. My comment on qualifications had absolutely nothing to do with Brindi, which would have been obvious, had you bothered to read the post. Brindi made no comment of an economics nature, so my request to be informed on qualifications of those making economic statements were not, and in fact, could not, be the result of Brindi "getting under my skin". By the way Brindi, I am still wondering about the wild dogs. Les, happy to do so if you change you change yours to laughing les, the long-term loser.
