Greener pastures beckon for RM Williams

Greener pastures beckon for RM Williams

11 Mar, 2010 10:17 AM
THERE is plenty of talk at the moment about why Australia's iconic bootmaker RM Williams is getting, well, too big for its boots.

The group is owned by Rupert Murdoch's former right-hand man, Ken Cowley, who took control of the company in 2003 and has lofty ambitions to buy up large tracts of rural land around Australia, including La Belle station in the Northern Territory for more than $70 million, reports The Australian Financial Review.

It's clearly veering away from the traditional retail business, so it's hardly surprising that the rumour mill is suggesting Oroton Group might run the slide rule over the famous brand.

Part of the company's rural land push is clearly about carbon credit. The word is that Caltex Australia was looking to chip in about $400 million for RM Williams Agricultural Holdings in order to gain some of the carbon credits.

And it isn't the only one to have shown interest; carbon finance business C-Quest Capital has already chipped in an equity investment.

It's a carbon bonanza! Who can I call at Caltex Australia? We've got 1000s of acres down here they can blow some cash on! Goodbye MIS and Hello Carbon Credits. Will we ever learn?

Its a pity with all the high flying one of the directors behind it all still won't pay for simple things....like the contractor who put his wheat crop in last last year.

So why are you so amazed, amazed. It’s the way of the urban regulated greed; most of the topics we read about are about urban people wanting more of the farm sector wealth, while hiding behind protection given to them by govt. When your greed is regulated, it becomes as right to do as he has done. It’s great for my wage, even though I don’t agree with what's happening.

Amazed at all the greed and ignorance? It is funny how rich people do not always pay poorer people for products or services rendered isn't it? One can only get by with the help of divine justice and believe me this exists. I suspect a lot of rich people will be sorely hurt by the GFC and farmers will still have food to eat without any dirty carbon credit money.

Is it just me, or is there a rush to make carbon trading 'to big to fail' or to put it more realistically to big for the government to allow it to fail. À la the major banks and their flawed lending policies.
